I’ve written a lot about medicine, homeopathy, and wellness, but that’s not what this blog post is about. I’m prefacing with that because I want to mention the rise of preventative medicine. We went through a phase we we were only treating symptoms of illness instead of treating the lifestyle issues that caused it, we’re finally changing that and it’s a great move. But, I think we should be doing preventative treatments for far more than just our health.
Life is hard to predict, there is no denying that, it has so many twists and turns that it’s really hard to know whats going to happen, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t practice preventative care.
There are a lot of things that we know happen throughout life, we know that relationships crumble, money problems arise, energy levels fall, stress arises. There are just some things we can count on, it’s unfortunate that they aren’t all good, but the bad things can be managed gracefully if you have a plan.
Now, planning for these things to happen probably won’t stop them, I actually wonder how much control we actually have over the bad events in our life. We certainly can’t stop them all and trying to would drive us insane. Sometime we just have to acknowledge that our control over things is limited, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t prevent a lot of the damage from those events if we find a way to prepare ourselves. It’s the years of healthy diet getting us through surgery better than someone who eaten wrong most their life. It’s using that lesson for everything.
I don’t know what will empty my bank account in the future, but can make sure there is more money in it to be emptied so I’ll end up in less debt. I don’t know which friendship will falter or how it will do it, but I can make sure I have multiple healthy relationships in my life that aren’t all reliant on each other so I still have people to lean on. I don’t know which life event is going to cause major stress, but having healthy coping mechanisms and ways to distress will certainly help me handle it better. There is something you can do to counter the bad things that evidently happen to everyone.
After all, we know ourselves better than anyone else in the world. So we don’t need to know the details of whats to come, we know enough to take care of ourselves in the future by tying up loose ends now. You’ve got one life. You know the coming events will shape you, but you can shape your future self too.
