Can I start by saying how much I adore Alice Hoffman? It’s not necessarily her stories (which are amazing) but her overall style of writing. It’s a little different than what I normally read, yet every time I read something from her I fall in love with it. First it was The Museum of Extraordinary Things which became my favorite adult fiction book, then it was The Rules of Magic. Every book I pick up I love, and this one was no different.

The ability to write a book that spans most the characters life is a difficult one, to watch a character transition from childhood to adulthood is a beautiful thing that we normally don’t see documented as years go by. It’s an amazing gift, one I saw both in this book of Hoffman’s and The Rules of Magic. I liked this book better though. It’s got some seriously sad undertones to it, so consider yourself warned, it deals with some deep topics, but the book itself is beautiful moving, and it has a happy ending, which I find I crave.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with this book and it was a good piece of fiction to start the year off with. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
